Installation of PCIGR instruments at UBC

January to June 2002 — UBC Chemistry Building

Nu 021 MC-ICP-MS and Triton TIMS (Finnigan) are installed.

These photos do not do justice to the stress of that event … The instruments did not go through the basement doors of the Chemistry building, the crane was moving too much, etc…. All ended up well, but … the clean labs were very basic.

What it all looked like after 6 months — we have gone a long way since then, even after a few lab catastrophies: AC leaks, melted piece, chem lab fiasco (or what happens when one use steel in exhaust pipes …).

Arrival of the Nu-Instruments in the DSTE

February 2001 — Brussels

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Université Libre de Bruxelles has acquired a multi-collector ICP-MS (Nu 015), Nu-Instruments through a combination of FRFC, ARC and Lotto funding.

The instrument was delivered in early February and was producing numbers very soon after. It is now being used routinely for Hf, Pb and Si analyses.

Prior to installation, the instrument was carried up the stairs, which was a memorable event – see pictures.
